| With the vast majority of the Lake Superior basin
sparsely populated and heavily forested, the region is known for its rugged high cliffs, expansive sand beaches, quaint historic towns, friendly people, clear cold waters and agate beaches. It is the "shining big sea water" of Longfellows Hiawatha. |

Isle Royale, a U.S. National Park and wilderness preserve, is Lake Superiors largest island. There are lodges on the 45-mile-long island, but its primary appeal is to campers, hikers and wilderness lovers. |
|
Described by a 19th-century visitor as an enchanting fairy-tale scene, the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore has 21 islands, 12 miles of pristine shoreline and possesses more lighthouses than any other coastline in the United States. Madeline Island (the 22nd Apostle Island not part of the National Lakeshore) hosts parks and beaches for camping, picnicking and swimming; trails for exploring, hiking and biking; venues for eating, shopping and learning and the only Apostle with permanent residents. |
